Advice for carers: How to know when it’s time?

Most carers want to look after their loved ones for as long as possible, but there comes a time when the care they need is greater than you’re able to provide on your own. This ‘time’ is different for each carer, but there are some common signs to look out for that may signal you need to consider moving your loved one to a care home like ours.

1. You’ve noticed a decline in your own physical or emotional health.

To provide a good level of care you need to be clear headed and fighting fit, but providing round the clock care can be tiring, stressful and emotionally draining. If your health begins to suffer you need to rest.

2. Your other relationships are suffering.

Caring for a loved one is very time consuming, this can affect the personal relationships that mean the most to you as you won’t be there when they need you. It’s important to ask how they’re coping with you being around less and seek their advice in regards to the best way to deal with it.

3. You’ve lost your temper at your loved one.

Caregiver burnout often causes carers to get angry when, what used to be simple tasks like getting your loved one dressed become difficult. If you begin to get angry, it may be time for the level of support only a care home can provide.

4. You’ve hurt yourself trying to look after your loved one.

As a caregiver, you’ll often be required to manually lift, move and support your loved one. This can easily lead to injury. If you’ve hurt yourself or noticed you’re not strong enough to continue, our care home is equipped to make it easy and more dignified for your loved one.

5. Family and friends have expressed concern for you.

Caregivers are resilient and it’s often easier to put a brave face on than admit you’re struggling to cope. A great tip is to listen your close friends and family. If they are frequently expressing concern for you, it might be time to seek some further support. Remember, they love you and are only looking out for your best interests.
