How we’ve kept the home COVID free

COVID-19 has had a devastating effect on care homes all across the country. But here in our quiet corner of picturesque South Devon, we’ve managed to keep our care home completely free from the awful virus.

How did we keep the home safe during the first spike?

We acted early

We made the incredibly difficult decision to close the home to all visitors on the 13th of March. This allowed us to create our own bubble with staff locking down in their own homes when not at work.

We adopted technology

The safety of our residents is always out number one priority. But closing off the home to visitors presented emotional and psychological challenges for all our residents. To combat this we quickly adopted Skype, Zoom and Facetime, giving our residents (and sometimes their families) a crash course in using the technology. 

Regular video calls have helped our residents keep in touch with their loved ones and also given them a new skill to master. 

What are we doing to keep COVID at bay?

A couple of weeks ago management approved restricted visits to the home. 

Visitors must sanitise their hands and wear a suitably fitting face mask before entering the home. Socially-distanced visits are taking place in our spacious conservatory. 

And although our residents and their families can’t physically embrace each other, a shared cup of tea with panoramic views of the moors is proving incredibly uplifting for everyone.

Proud of our record, but staying vigilant

We are so proud that we have kept the home safe from this awful virus. Along with everyone else we will be relieved when COVID-19 is a thing of the past.
